Build-A-Bear Workshop first opened in and is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. It opened its first international stores in 2003, opening a store in Edmonton, Canada in May and a store in Sheffield, England in November. Since then, the company has opened (and sometimes closed) stores in over 30 countries on 6 continents.

There are three primary models Build-A-Bear uses for its global locations:[1][2]

  • Company-owned (also company-operated, corporate-owned, etc): These stores are operated either directly by Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc., or by locally incorporated subsidiaries of the company such as Build-A-Bear Canada Ltd.
  • Franchise-operated: These stores are operated by a local company that has signed an agreement with Build-A-Bear in order to license the rights to open and operate both brick-and-mortar Workshops and a webstore.
  • Partner-operated (also third-party retail): These stores are located within and operated by other established retail brands, such as Hamleys and FAO Schwartz.
