Scentiments (stylized as SCENTiments, also known as "scents") are small plastic discs infused with fragrances. They are one of three main types of stuffer that can be inserted into a normal- or giant-sized furry friend at the Stuff Me station, and are usually introduced alongside either a specific furry friend or a seasonal collection. Many regions and webstores do not allow Scentiments to be purchased separately from furry friends.


Discs

Scentiments are typically shaped like the bear head in Build-A-Bear's logo, but are sometimes shaped like hearts instead.


The discs are heat activated, which means it can take some time for them to become smellable through a bear's fur, depending on the strength of the scent and the density of the bear's fur. Rubbing the disc on the outside of the bear before placing it inside can mitigate this, but this technique can sometimes have the unintended side effect of staining the fur or leaving a colored residue, especially on lighter colored bears. Some scents, such as Pumpkin Spice, Fresh Cut Flowers, and Berry Blast, are more prone to causing this than others.


Scents have variable lifespans, with some lasting 10 years or more and others seeming to fade almost immediately upon insertion, depending on the, scent, the bear, and how much the disc is activated by hugs and cuddles over the years.


History

The first set of Scentiments launched in summer 2012; three of these scents (Bubblegum, Strawberry, and Cotton Candy) are still available today.[1] They were originally meant to be placed in a furry friend's paw,[2] but today it is common for them to be placed in the torso instead, and many fans will request a back of head placement so the Scentiment can be easily smelled while hugging the bear.


Not all scents have been available to purchase in all regions, but there has not to date been a Scentiment that could not be purchased in the United States.

Bubblegum 18957[4] 2012 Available Noted to smell just like Hubba Bubba bubblegum. The disc is bear head shaped and was originally transparent (against the original yellow packaging it appeared orange or red),[5] but it was later redesigned to be opaque bubblegum pink. Bubblegum was released as part of the first wave of Scentiments,[1] and has been part of the default lineup of Scentiments since its introduction.

Strawberry 18958[6] 2012 Available A sweet and tangy artificial strawberry scent. The disc is bear head shaped and was originally transparent fire truck red,[5] but was later redesigned to be opaque. Strawberry was released as part of the first wave of Scentiments,[1] and has been part of the default lineup of Scentiments since its introduction.

Cotton Candy 18959[7] 2012 Available A bright sugary scent, many fans report Cotton Candy having fruity blue raspberry notes.[8] The disc is bear head shaped and was originally a light, transparent baby blue,[5][9] but was later redesigned to be opaque cornflower blue. Cotton Candy was released as part of the first wave of Scentiments,[1] and has been part of the default lineup of Scentiments since its introduction.
Grape 18960[10] 2012 Retired Grape was released as part of the first wave of Scentiments.[1]
Chocolate Chip Cookie 18961[11] 2012 Retired Chocolate Chip Cookie was released as part of the first wave of Scentiments.[1] The disc is bear head shaped and a dark chocolatey brown.[12]
Peppermint 19323[13] 2012 Retired Peppermint was most likely released alongside the Christmas bears in November 2012. The disc is a transparent bear head shape in cherry red.[14]
Mint Chocolate Chip 20034[15] 2013 Retired Mint Chocolate Chip was released alongside Girl Scouts Thin Mints Bear (2013). The disc is an opaque bear head shape in light emerald green.[16] Possibly due to its loose association with Girl Scouts (an American association), Mint Chocolate Chip does not appear to have had a wide global release, but it was available in Australia.[17]
Frosted Icing 20784[18] 2013 Retired A strong, sugary vanilla icing smell. Frosted Icing was most likely released alongside the Christmas bears in October/November 2013. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in a slightly shimmery warm white color.[19]
Unknown Chocolate Coconut 21290[20] 2014 Retired Chocolate Coconut was released alongside Girl Scouts Coconut Caramel Bear (2014) in January 2014. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in a rich caramel brown color. Possibly due to its loose association with Girl Scouts (an American association), Chocolate Coconut does not appear to have been available outside the US.
Pineapple 21349[21] 2014 Retired Pineapple released in early Spring 2014, possibly as part of the Easter drop. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in light yellow.[22]
Apple Blossom 21723[23] 2014 Retired A fan-favorite fresh, fruity scent that blends real apple and flower smells. Apple Blossom released in autumn 2014. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in a bright pink color.[24]
Gingerbread 22054[25] 2014 Retired Gingerbread likely released with the Christmas bears in November 2014. After selling out, it briefly restocked in 2016.[26] The disc is an opaque bear head shape in a rich brown color that resembles real gingerbread.[27][28][29]
Lavender

English Lavender (HB)		 22691[30]

(limited)		 A relatively variable scent that released in spring 2015. Though it rarely smells like real lavender, many fans enjoy the floral, soapy, or sweet elements it has.[32] The disc is an opaque bear head shape in Mardi Gras purple.[33]


Lavender is still available from Build-A-Bear US and Build-A-Bear UK, as well as from the Heartbox side of the UK webstore.

Honey 22751[34] 2015 Retired A complex, controversial scent. While some enjoy this scent, many do not, and Honey is notorious for "going bad" over time; it is frequently described as smelling like feet, rotting honey, or even urine.[35][36][37][38] Honey released in summer 2015, likely alongside the release of the first set of Honey Girls in July. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in shimmery "Winnie the Pooh" gold.[39]


Pumpkin 22818[40] 2015 Retired A relatively variable sweet pumpkin-y scent. Pumpkin released alongside the Halloween collection in September 2015, and restocked reliably for the Halloween season every year between 2016 and 2019, before being replaced with Pumpkin Spice in 2020.[41][42][43] In the UK, this scent was not replaced with Pumpkin Spice until 2023.[44][45][46] Some batches of this scent have more of a plain pumpkin/pumpkin pie scent, and others, especially the ones with the "cupcake" icon, have a more strongly vanilla-y cakey scent; in general, it has a less spiced fragrance than Pumpkin Spice. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in bright pumpkin orange.[47][48]
Banana 23189[49] 2015 Retired Banana released in mid-2015, possibly alongside the Minions release in May. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in pastel yellow.[50]
Berry Blast 22914[51] 2015 Retired A fruity and relatively natural-smelling mixed berry scent. Berry Blast released around fall 2015 and was later retired due to being very prone to leaving purple stains on and inside bears.[52] The disc is an opaque bear head shape in a deep indigo blue color.[53]
Hot Chocolate 22817[54] 2015 Retired Hot Chocolate released in late 2015, likely alongside the Christmas drop in November. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in a light milk chocolate brown color.[55][56]
Chocolate 23187[57] 2016 Retired Chocolate came out at the beginning of 2016. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in a light milk chocolate brown color.[58]
Candy 23415[59] 2016 Retired Candy released in early 2016, possibly alongside the Easter drop in mid-late February. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in cherry red. [60]
Pizza 23808[61] 2016 Retired A powerful and controversial savory scent. At its best, Pizza is described by fans as smelling like oregano, garlic, and/or cheese, or like pizza-flavored Combos; at its worst, it's described as smelling like bile or vomit.[62][63] It was released in May 2016, alongside Build-A-Bear's second set of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in a cheesy safety orange color.[48][64]
Donut 23673[65] 2016 Retired A sweet bakery scent, Donut is described by fans as smelling like chocolate cake or chocolate frosting.[66][67][68] It was released alongside Donut Bear in June 2016. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in sky blue.[69][70]
Marshmallow 23496[71] 2016 Retired A sweet scent that smells like opening a bag of marshmallows. Marshmallow was originally released alongside the Ghostbusters collection in June 2016, and later restocked in 2023 (US only).[72] The disc is an opaque bear head shape in a shimmery beige color.[73][74]
Vanilla Cupcake 23893[75] 2016 Available (limited) A sweet frosted vanilla cake scent.[76] Vanilla Cupcake (also called Cupcake in some countries) was released in summer/fall 2016. It served as the replacement for Cupcake (2012) and was itself later replaced with Birthday Cake (2019).[3] The disc is an opaque bear head shape in a shimmery cream color.[77][78]


Vanilla Cupcake is still available from Build-A-Bear UAE, and is retired in all other countries.

Peppermint 24223[79]

(reliable)		 A sweet, mentholated scent that some describe as smelling like toothpaste. In the pack, Peppermint is a very strong scent with punchy methol notes, but it mellows out considerably when placed inside a bear, to the point that it is notorious for being a weak scent with little staying power.[81][82][83] Peppermint released in late 2016, most likely alongside the release of 2016's Merry Mission collection on November 1. It has been restocked every year since its introduction as the seasonal Christmas scent and is expected to continue to restock the same way.[84][85][86] The disc is an opaque bear head shape in light mint green/teal.[87][88]


Peppermint is currently available from the Heartbox side of the US webstore, the Heartbox side of the UK webstore, Build-A-Bear Australia, Build-A-Bear South Africa, and Build-A-Bear Chile.

Grape 23871[89] 2016 Retired Grape released sometime in 2016.
Sugar Cookie 24646[90] 2017 Retired A sweet iced sugar cookie scent that reportedly smells just like Lofthouse cookies. Sugar Cookie released in spring 2017, possibly alongside Cakes N Treats Bear in April. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in a warm cream color.[91]
Popcorn 25363[92] 2017 Retired A plain popcorn scent, Popcorn is described as smelling like the inside of a theater.[93] It is apparently particularly good for pairing with other Scentiments to make flavored popcorn scents.[94] Popcorn was released in fall 2017.[95][96] The disc is a translucent bear head shape in light "popped popcorn shell" brown.[97]

Toasted Marshmallow 25816[92][98] 2018 Retired A sweet marshmallow scent with light toasty notes.[99] Toasted Marshmallow was released in early 2018, most likely alongside the Girl Scouts S'mores Campout Bear in March. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in shimmery beige.[100]
Sugar 'n' Sparkle 25775[101] 2018 Retired A light, sweet scent. Sugar 'n' Sparkle is described by fans as being similar to a sugar cookie scent, having notes of apple and being similar to Apple Blossom, or resembling a Japanese cherry blossom scent.[102][103][104][105] It was released alongside the Beary Fairy Friends collection in April 2020.[106] The disc is a transparent bear head shape in sparkly deep pink. [107][108][109][110]
Candy Surprise 26925[111] 2018 Retired A fruity candy scent that is described as smelling like Jolly Ranchers. Candy Surprise was released in late 2018 or early 2019, possibly alongside the Friendship Pops collection in late December 2018. The disc is a transparent heart shape in cherry red.[112]
Thin Mints Cookie 26805[113] 2019 Retired A chocolate mint scent. Thin Mints Cookie is a slightly variable scent, with some batches being more chocolate-heavy and others being more mint-heavy, which seems to result in this scent having a mixed reception among fans.[114][115][116][117] It released alongside the Girl Scouts Thin Mints Cookie Bear in January/February 2019, and was most likely US exclusive due to Girl Scouts branding. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in "Thin Mints box" green.[118]
Fresh Cut Flowers

Floral Bouquet (HB)		 27113[119]

(limited)		 A strong fresh floral scent with some grassy notes. Fresh Cut Flowers is described as smelling like a garden full of flowers, a lilac bush, or clean laundry.[121][122][123] It released in early 2019, and was apparently pulled due to a tendency to stain bears; even after it was rereleased it has been known to leave pink staining on lighter-colored bears.[124][125] The disc is an opaque heart shape in bright pink.[126]

Birthday Cake

Sugary Sweet (HB)		 27196[127]
29780 (HB)[128]		 2019 Available A warm vanilla cake smell; some fans report this scent also has notes of coconut.[129] Birthday Cake served as a replacement for Vanilla Cupcake and was available as early as April 2019.[3][130] The disc is an opaque bear head shape in sky blue.[131][132]
Fresh Pineapple 27185[133] 2019 Available
(limited)		 A bright summery pineapple scent that has been described by fans as smelling like Dole Whip.[134] Fresh Pineapple released alongside the summer seasonal collection in May 2019 and restocked with the summer seasonal collection in April 2023. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in bright pineapple yellow.

Tropical Popsicle 27186[133] 2019 Retired Tropical Popsicle was released alongside the summer collection in May 2019 and was designed specifically as a pair with Tropical Popsicle Bear. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in magenta.[135][136]
Shark Snack 27187[133] 2019 Retired A summery scent that most describe as smelling like sunscreen and coconut.[129] It was apparently intended to be the "boy version" of Mermaid Sparkle, hence the two scents smell very similar.[137][138] Shark Snack released in May 2019 alongside the summer collection and Shark Week collection. The disc is a transparent bear head shape in robin's egg blue.[139][140]
Mermaid Sparkle 27261[133] 2019 Retired A sunscreeny, coconutty scent. It was apparently intended to be the "girl version" of Shark Snack, hence the two scents smell very similar.[137][138] Mermaid Sparkle released in May 2019 alongside the summer collection. The disc is a transparent heart shape in sparkly robin's egg blue.[100]
Magic Shimmer Potion 27594[141] 2019 Retired A strong candy scent, Magic Shimmer Potion is often described as smelling like sour candy apple or apple Jolly Ranchers, though some fans report grape notes.[142][143][144] It was released in September 2019 alongside the Halloween collection. The disc is a transparent heart shape in sparkly magenta purple.[145]
Shimmering Snow 28165[146] 2019 Retired A fresh, clean scent with minty and floral notes, Shimmering Snow is described as smelling like laundry detergent, cologne, or mint and honey.[147][148][149][150][151] It was the winter scent for 2019, and released in November alongside the Merry Mission collection. The disc is a transparent bear head shape in sparkly glacier blue.[152]
Rose Bouquet

(reliable)		 A sweet, powdery rose scent. Some fans report fruity notes with this scent, describing it as a strawberry-rose fragrance.[155] Rose Bouquet was introduced in January 2020 and has been restocked reliably alongside the Valentine's Day seasonal releases since 2022.[156] It is a relatively variable scent between years, with some batches being more artificial and perfumey and others being more like fresh real roses. The disc is an opaque heart shape in rose red.[157]

Heart Sparkles 28166[158] 2020 Retired A sweet and fruity candy scent, Heart Sparkles is described as smelling like a cherry lollipop.[159][102] It released in early 2020, possibly alongside the Valentine's collection in early January or the Heartables collections in mid-January. The disc is a transparent heart shape in sparkly cherry red.[160][100][161]
Coconut Caramel Cookie 28187[162] 2020 Retired A sugary cookie scent with notes of coconut and caramel.[129] Coconut Caramel Cookie was released alongside Girl Scouts Coconut Caramel Cookie Bear (2020) at the end of January 2020, and was most likely US exclusive due to Girl Scouts branding. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in a rich milk chocolate brown.[163][164]
Rainbow Magic 28270[165] 2020 Retired A sweet, floral scent. Apparently intended to smell "clean like after a good rain," many fans report soapy or shampoo-y notes in addition to its perfumey floral ones, and it is sometimes specifically described as smelling like Gain fabric softener.[166][167][168] Rainbow Magic was released in 2020, possibly alongside the summer collection in June 2020. The disc is a transparent heart shape in sparkly light blush pink; occasionally discs of this scent will have faint color fades from pink to cream.[169][170][110]
Bearied Treasure 28517[171] 2020 Retired A tropical, fruity scent that smells like pinã colada.[172][173][174] Bearied Treasure was released alongside the summer collection in June 2020. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in bright turquoise.[175]
Mermaid Jewels 28518[176] 2020 Retired A fruity candy scent, Mermaid Jewels is near universally described as a watermelon candy scent, like watermelon Jolly Ranchers.[177][178][179] It was released alongside the summer collection in June 2020. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in bright pink.[180][181]
Banana 28169[182] 2020 Retired A sweet banana candy scent, Banana is described as smelling like banana-flavored Laffy Taffy, Runts, or popsicles.[183] It was released alongside the Minions drop in July/August 2020.[184][185] The disc is an opaque bear head shape in a light lemon yellow.[186][187]

Pumpkin Spice 28381[188]

(reliable)		 A creamy spiced pumpkin scent with notes of vanilla. Pumpkin Spice has restocked reliably in the United States for every Halloween seasonal release since its was first introduced,[190][191][192] and is often slightly different depending on region, batch, or year, with some batches having more pronounced spice notes and other batches having more pronounced pumpkin or vanilla notes. It was initially released alongside the Halloween drop in September 2020. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in bright pumpkin orange.[193][194][195]

(limited)		 A light, sweet coconut scent. Many fans report chemical notes that remind them of sunscreen or shampoo, and others report that it smells very similar to Birthday Cake or popcorn.[198][199][200] Coconut was released in summer 2022.[201] The disc is a transparent bear head shape in sky blue.[202][100]

(limited)		 A strong sweet scent that smells just like peach rings candy. Peach was released in August 2022 as an online exclusive, and was only available in the US.[205] The disc is an opaque heart shape in sky blue.

Coffee 30890[206]

(limited)		 A strong and relatively controversial scent. It is variously reported as smelling like caramel popcorn, coffee-flavored M&Ms, or a coffee flavored cookie, rather than like coffee or coffee beans, and it seems that the disc being heated brings out more unpleasant fragrances that can give it more of an acrid or burnt smell.[208][209][210] Coffee was released in September 2022 as an online exclusive.[211] The disc is an opaque bear head shape in very dark brown.[212][213]

Blueberry 31398[214] 2023 Retired A fruity scent that, while not smelling exactly like fresh blueberries, seems to be generally well-received by fans, who describe it as smelling like blueberry candy, artificial blueberry flavoring, (cheap) blueberry pie, or a nonspecific berry scent, sometimes with floral notes.[215][216][217] It was released in March 2023 alongside the Blueberry Cow, as an online exclusive. The disc is an opaque bear head shape in navy blue.[218]
